In this chapter, we
theoretically tackle the issue of evaluating English language teachers in
educational institutions. In some parts of the world and out of all
structural elements in institutes of education, teachers seem to receive the
least amount of support and/or opportunities to assess their proficiency or
to evaluate their teaching skills. Where teachers’ performance evaluation
does receive sufficient attention, cases sometimes can be expected where
educators might be unaware of the latest up-to-date information concerning
the methods that are utilized or the purposes behind the evaluation systems
in their context and any policies related to it. The objectives of this
chapter are to review and contribute to the current debates on the purposes
and methods of evaluating language teachers’ performance.

This paper addresses the issue
of techniques used by English Language Institute teachers at King Abdul-Aziz
University to end their face-to-face conversation. In recent years,
conversation analysis trends have been the focus of much research. A
considerable number of studies have been conducted on conversation closing
strategies and techniques (e.g. Stenström, 1992; DwiNugroho, 1993; Schegloff
& Sacks 2000; Marlina, 2001; Stockwell, 2002; Saptiana, 2004; Sambo,
2005); yet, due attention is not given to this linguistic phenomenon in Saudi
society. In an attempt to fill in this gap in the literature, this research
utilizes Saptiana’s (2004) method of closing functions and techniques which
proposes twenty techniques based on three theories: five techniques from
Albert and Kessler (1976), nine techniques from Wardhaugh (1985), and six
techniques from Stenström (1992). The data in the current study is taken from
a recording of open informal conditioned conversations between two faculty
members. The findings demonstrate that ELI teachers utilize eighteen
different techniques. This proves the hypothesis that well-educated people
use a wide range of closing techniques. Dismissing oneself and giving reasons
are found to be the most frequent closing techniques. In addition, the
findings reveal that six techniques in Saptiana’s (2004) study are found to
be irrelevant to our data. Her classification is also found to be
insufficient for the purpose of analyzing all the data in this research.
Thus, additional expansions were required.

According to most of the
definitions, an idiom is a special linguistic expression whose meaning cannot
be determined by the literal definition of the constituent parts, but rather
refers to a figurative meaning that is fossilized and becomes known only through
common use. This paper proposes that a considerable number of idioms in
Arabic are motivated by a systematic conceptual meaning. The systematic
motivation is derived from a set of conceptual mappings that is obtained
between a source and a target domain on the basis of Cognitive Theory of
Metaphor developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Despite the existence of
numerous studies on this phenomenon in English (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980;
Lakoff, 1987; Gibbs & O’Brien, 1990; Kövecses & Szabó, 1996; Benczes,
2002), it has not been the focus of much attention in Arabic. In an attempt
to fill in this gap in the literature, the present study investigates how the
Cognitive Theory of Metaphor works on some hand idioms in Arabic. After
examining the data, a particular interest is directed to the syntactic
features of the corpus. The internal semantic structure of idioms has been
taken into consideration by testing how Langlotz’s (2006) idiomatic
activation-sets model of idiom semantics operates over the data. The investigation
has shown how the hand is being conceptualized in Arabic idioms. In addition,
two of Langlotz’s (2006) idiomatic activation-sets models have been applied
effectively to the idioms of the study.

In this article, an attempt is made to
analyze syntactic ambiguity in a specific register, i.e. newspaper headlines.
As a form of media text, newspaper has a significant role in society as it
presents various local, national and international events and information. In
order to attract readers’ attention, journalists may tend to form headlines
to be ambiguous and confusing so that readers become curious to read the
whole report. This article addresses the issue of syntactic ambiguity caused
by prepositional phrase (PP) attachment in newspaper headlines by analyzing
examples of such headlines. After investigating the ambiguity of the
headlines, an attention was directed to PP attachment preferences by
examining the type of headlines (VP-NP-PP and NP1-NP2-PP structure). The main
results were that NP attachment was generally preferred over VP attachment
and NP1 attachment was notably favored over NP2 attachment.
