This paper presents a child-centred
product design development process to produce a customized
fingerprint-activated remote control for children using additive
manufacturing technology. The paper is centred on the idea of using
children’s input in a design process using the imagination of the child. The
My Remote manages television viewing content for children, restricts
inappropriate content, controls viewing time and helps maintain a safe
distance from the television screen. A finger-shaped design inspired by
children based on the fingerprint recognition and the action of pointing at
the television was adopted which demonstrated a synergy of functional and
aesthetic design. The design process considered 4D elements: such as
interface design, navigation, mood lighting and sounds, and 3D
representations using Solid Works showing various colour schemes. Prototype
models were produced using SLA (Stereo lithography) and FDM (fused deposit
modelling) techniques, allowing for ergonomic testing and visualisation. The
study found that including children’s input allowed subtle adaptations in the
design requirements of the children because they were able to ergonomically
test the remote control. The research culminated in a prototype model
finger-shaped design, which fulfilled the criteria that it had to be
innovative, inspired and liked by children, be comfortable and demonstrate
functional requirements.

Technology that facilitates rapid
prototyping and rapid manufacturing has become increasingly available to the
ordinary user in the home, the office, or at school. These rapid prototyping
technologies should make it possible to offer school children the opportunity
to design and then realise three dimensional (3D) objects. One of the
perceived benefits of this is that children can become more involved in the
process of producing 3D objects. Unfortunately, because of the nature of the
available of the technology, and the issues associated with access to
materials, adult help, supervision and assistance are often required,
depriving children of the opportunity to create and produce freely, taking
ownership of the process.
This study evaluates the different techniques
and materials available to children, highlighting their benefits and
limitations, and reaching a conclusion about which materials and techniques
are the most suitable for achieving a child-led approach to production. The
study concludes that Cubify Cube is the most appropriate solution in terms of
ease of use, not requiring adult assistance or supervision or the realisation
of designs.

The
imagination and creative ability of a child is something that is a pleasure
to see in designs created by children. Unfortunately, when children design,
they are subject to adult influence, which is reflected in designs that show
lower creativity. In order to realise the purity of the imagination of the
child, adult involvement needs to be excluded. This study is based on the
argument that children can produce pure art if pedagogical influences are
excluded. Children created designs independent of adult involvement during
the study and the creativity in their work was measured against factors in
terms of pure and uninfluenced design. Comparisons were made with designs
produced in school. The child-led approach was extended to realise designs
through 2D and 3D product development, using silk-screen and 3D printing. The
results showed that an absence of adult involvement increased creativity.

When
children create art and design, the role of the teacher is important,
however, their involvement in the form of instruction, monitoring,
encouraging or judging, can influence creativity both positively and negatively.
In order to understand this influence on creativity,
this study investigates the type of teacher involvement and their perception
of that involvement as a role and aspects of the child-teacher relationship that
may have a bearing on creativity. Questionnaires were distributed to art and
design teachers and the results showed that teachers felt their involvement
was important and they are more involved in facilitation rather than
creativity.

Design
and Manufacturing of Remote Control for Child Viewing Using Children’s
Inspiration

The
recruitment of children’s imagination in the development of new product
design provides an interesting source of new ideas for product development,
including for products for children. This study is related to the design and
manufacture of a prototype for a remote control that controls television
viewing content for children, to protect them from inappropriate content,
control their viewing time and keep them at a safe distance from the
television screen. For security reasons this remote control is activated by a
fingerprint recognition system. Research was carried out to comprehend
children’s behaviour and their television viewing habits, this was
instrumental in the development of design ideas. In particular the design was
influenced by input from parents and children and the relationship between
the functionality and the use of the remote control, producing a
finger-shaped design inspired by the fingerprint recognition and the action
of pointing the device at the television. The project considered 4D elements:
such as interface design, mood lighting and sounds and 3D representations
using Solid Works were produced showing various colour schemes. Prototype
models were produced using SLA (stereo lithography) and FDM (fused deposit
modelling) techniques, allowing for ergonomic testing and visualisation.

Realising a
child’s imagination in product design for both two-dimensional and
three-dimensional products through a child-led approach
|
ملخص المشاركة:

Often designs for children are created
by adults, and where children are involved in the design process there are
varying degrees of participation, ranging from children being mere informants
to a more child-led approach, however, for the latter the adult is still
present. Children should be allowed to design independently from adults and
realise their imagination in designs free from adult influence. This poster
presents a design approach where children are given the opportunity to design
and then realise their designs in 3D objects free from adult involvement and
influence, the latest 3D printing technology to allow children to become
completely involved in the process of developing their designs. The result of
this new approach is a new design paradigm.
The methodology involved the
development of a completely child-centered approach to design, based on
primary research with art and design teachers to identify the type and level
of involvement. The success of the approach was verified through a comparative
evaluation of creativity by expert and non-expert judges and a
post-experiment focus group conducted with children to gain ideas about their
feelings of independence and freedom from adult influence. The results showed
that there was an overall increase in creativity using the approach and a
decrease in attributes of the work that show signs of influence from the
classroom. This new approach to design not only reveals a new design
paradigm, but also allows children the opportunity to be enterprising in the design
and development of new products and ideas. This enterprising spirit will
create opportunities for children to take the initiative to introduce design
ideas into their lives.
