Demand
on multimedia content by consumers’ handheld devices over wireless channels
is on the increase. In view of the accelerated trend towards consumption of
high quality video, power utilization by mobile devices is expected to
excessively increase. Hence, it becomes equally important to advance more
efficient power minimization techniques, in light of the short battery life
in portable devices. However, power minimization algorithms that adopt
consumers’ perceptual quality of video have not received adequate research.
This paper proposes a joint optimization of energy and quality requirements
in a multiuser orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing environment. A
multi-objective optimization problem is formulated with the aim to identify
bitrate allocations among users such that total power is minimized, and
average quality is maximized. For this, a content-aware and energy-efficient
resource allocation scheme (CaERAS) is proposed based on genetic and greedy
algorithms. Simulation results show that CaERAS, as a lowcomplexity scheme,
outperforms comparable methods in terms of efficiency and selectivity of
suboptimal solutions. It is shown to acquire a suboptimal solution in as low
as 0.0025 of the search space in previous methods. Also, a significant
average saving of 85.66% in required energy is observed in broadcast
transmission as opposed to unicast transmission.

Perceptual
QoE based resource allocation for mobile 3D video communications
|
ملخص المشاركة:

This
paper suggests a power and bandwidth efficient resource allocation approach
for mobile networks based on consumer’s perception of 3D video. We simulate a
mobile 3D video transmission through which we identify the correlation
between receiver’s signal-to-noise ratio and perceived quality. Our QoE-based
approach is shown to save up to 33.13% in power and grant up to 50% more data
bits for transmission, compared to QoS-based techniques.

QoE
Based Performance Evaluation for 3D Video Transmission Over Mobile Broadband
Networks
|
ملخص المشاركة:

In the
recent decade, stereoscopic 3D video has attracted a larger portion of the
consumer market, due to the added dimension of entertainment. However, since
it contains additional information to be transmitted over the network, an
extra burden is added to the already congested network’s capacity. Moreover,
transmitting the 3D signal over error-prone wireless networks extends the
complications. In literature, models have been introduced to address resource
allocation issues of multimedia content based on Quality of Service (QoS) and
network parameters. Since previous work, based on Quality of Experience
(QoE), has not comprehensively examined 3D video issues pertaining to network
utilization, we take this step and as a main contribution in this paper we
suggest that network resource allocation could be more efficient provided it
is based on consumer’s perception of 3D video. Ultimately, the substantial conclusions
drawn from the conducted simulations demonstrate a bandwidth saving of up to
1.51Mbps and up to 6.02 dB conserve in signal power.

Power – Efficient and Content – Aware
Resource Allocation for
OFDM Systems Based on a Utility Function
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
In the
wireless network arena, excessive demand on the already scarce resources has
raised the awareness of power-efficiency along with bandwidth utilization.
Out of this prospect, several research efforts have been focusing on the
issue of subcarrier and bit allocation while considering network energy
consumption. Consequently, we take those efforts a further step by conducting
methodical research of the power allocation schemes, suggesting a
rate-adaptive joint algorithmic allocation scheme based on the genetic and
greedy algorithms, and proposing a content-aware approach for bit-rate
assignation to users based on their perceptual quality assessment. For this
purpose, a model of OFDM wireless channels is simulated assuming digital
video transmission in a multiuser environment. The proposed rate-adaptive
power allocation scheme is evaluated and shown to outweigh other schemes.
Furthermore, the QoE-based approach for user required bit-rate assignment is
demonstrated to be fruitful in terms of bandwidth use and hence power
consumption. In order to balance the demands of required-power and
increased-quality in the suggested technique, a utility function is derived
on the basis of network operator’s advantage. Accordingly, in a comparison of
4 methods used for bit-rate allocation, the genetic algorithm based (GA) is
shown to overcome other methods for efficiency with low complexity.

Application of Genetic and Greedy
Algorithms for Power Efficiency in Adaptive Sub-channel and Bit Allocation
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Energy consumption has attracted
significant attention by the research community in response to the green
initiatives pertaining to electronic equipment and devices. This is
especially applicable to wireless environments since the trend of adopting
wireless technologies is on the increase. Hence, in this paper we suggest a
method for wireless communications to minimize the total power required for
transmission. The method considers sub-channel and bit allocation in
orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems for a multiuser scenario.
The problem is addressed by exploiting genetic and greedy algorithms mutually
to attain minimum power allocation among several users. Through simulation,
the proposed method is shown to outperform static allocation methods with an
average of 37.20% less required power. It is also shown that the more
required bitrate by users the more power saving is achieved.
