In the last decade, several
manual tradition measurement techniques were used to document the heritage
buildings around the word; however, some of these techniques take a long
time, often lack completeness, and may sometimes give unreliable information.
In contrast, terrestrial laser scanning “TLS” surveys and Photogrammetry have
already been undertaken in several heritage sites in the United Kingdom and
other countries of Europe as a new method of documenting heritage sites. This
paper focuses on using the TLS and Photogrammetry methods to document one of
the important houses in Historic Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which is Nasif
Historical House, as an example of Digital Heritage Documentation (DHD).

The heritage buildings in
historic Jeddah City face serious issues related to their management,
conservation, documentation and monitoring of this important building sector.
In recent years, incorporation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and
heritage recording have been presented as Heritage BIM ‘HBIM’, which is now a
technique used to deal more efficiently with the tasks of management and
documentation of these historic buildings. The most important issues that can
affect this method are the modelling methods and determining the level of
development (LoD), which can cause delays in project delivery times. This
paper examines Heritage BIM for heritage buildings in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Both the manual and semi-automatic modelling methods are considered in this
study, in addition to employing Hijazi Architectural Object Library (HAOL),
focussing upon two main factors: the ‘As-built’ level of development (LoD)
and project delivery time (PDT) from the architecture engineering perspective.

Historical Building Information Modeling Old Jeddah – Saudi Arabia
|
ملخص المشاركة:

The historic city of Jeddah faces
serious issues in the documentation, conservation, and recording of its
valuable building stock. Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Architectural
Photogrammetry have already been used in many Heritage sites in the world.
The integration of heritage recording and Building Information Modelling
(BIM) has been introduced as HBIM and is now a method to document and manage
these buildings. In the last 10 years ago many traditional engineering
methods were used to record the buildings in Old Jeddah. On the other hand,
these methods can sometimes offer unreliable information, take a long time,
and often lack completeness. This paper will look at another method for
heritage recording by using the Jeddah Historical Building Information
Modelling (JHBIM).

Documentation of the Nasif
Historical House using the Terrestrial laser scanning and Image Survey
Methods in Historical Jeddah – Saudi Arabia
|
ملخص المشاركة:

Historical Jeddah, one of the
most important historical sites in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has had a long
history since it became the main gateway for the hajjis. The city contains
many historical monuments founded more than 100 years ago, such as the Nasif
House, which was built in 1881. However, the historical monuments in Jeddah
face serious issues of different natures, such as problems of documentation
and conservation. In the last decade, several manual measurement techniques
were used to document these buildings; however, these techniques take a long
time, often lack completeness, and may sometimes give unreliable information.
In contrast, Terrestrial laser scanning “TLS” surveys and image surveys have
already been undertaken in several heritage sites in the United Kingdom and
other countries of Europe as a new method of documenting heritage sites. This
paper focuses on using the Terrestrial laser scanning and image survey
methods to document Nasif House, as an example of historical architectural
documentation.

INTEGRATION OF JEDDAH HISTORICAL
BIM AND 3D GIS FOR DOCUMENTATION AND RESTORATION OF HISTORICAL MONUMENT
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
This work outlines a new
approach for the integration of 3D Building Information Modelling and the 3D
Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide semantically rich models, and
to get the benefits from both systems to help document and analyse cultural
heritage sites. Our proposed framework is based on the Jeddah Historical
Building Information Modelling process (JHBIM). This JHBIM consists of a
Hijazi Architectural Objects Library (HAOL) that supports higher level of
details (LoD) while decreasing the time of modelling. The Hijazi Architectural
Objects Library has been modelled based on the Islamic historical manuscripts
and Hijazi architectural pattern books. Moreover, the HAOL is implemented
using BIM software called Autodesk Revit. However, it is known that this BIM
environment still has some limitations with the non-standard architectural
objects. Hence, we propose to integrate the developed 3D JHBIM with 3D GIS
for more advanced analysis. To do so, the JHBIM database is exported and
semantically enriched with non-architectural information that is necessary
for restoration and preservation of historical monuments. After that, this
database is integrated with the 3D Model in the 3D GIS solution. At the end
of this paper, we’ll illustrate our proposed framework by applying it to a
Historical Building called Nasif Historical House in Jeddah. First of all,
this building is scanned by the use of a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and
Close Range Photogrammetry. Then, the 3D JHBIM based on the HOAL is designed
on Revit Platform. Finally, this model is integrated to a 3D GIS solution
through Autodesk InfraWorks. The shown analysis presented in this research
highlights the importance of such integration especially for operational
decisions and sharing the historical knowledge about Jeddah Historical City.
Furthermore, one of the historical buildings in Old Jeddah, Nasif Historical
House, was chosen as a test case for the project.

HISTORICAL
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING “HBIM” TOWARD THE SUSTAINABILITY
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
One of the most important topics
over the last decade is the sustainability in the design and modern building
industry. Recently, many researches have been done and focusing on using new
friendly materials, which can provide the sustainability for the design and
the buildings sectors. However, many of historical building around the
worldwide are great example of how these historical buildings can be
providing the sustainability and to be friendly with the environment.
Furthermore, a great example can be found in the Old City of Jeddah, Saudi
Arabia, which is contain a lot of historic buildings “around 600 buildings”,
which have been built for more than 350 years ago with special characters
that exhibit the very culture of the nation. During the last years, many
researches have been conducted based on Building Information Modelling (BIM)
to ensure an optimized sustainable building design around worldwide.
Consequently, there is an extremely need for Historical Building Information
Modelling (HBIM) for documentation, monitoring, conservation and simulation
purposes. Therefore, The aim of this research is to extensionally analyse and
understand the key sustainability factors of Historical buildings in Jeddah,;
by using the Jeddah Historical Building Information Modelling “JHBIM” to
analyse one of the historical buildings in Historic Jeddah as case study in
order to ensure the extent to which traditional passive cooling and solar
strategies can work efficiently in such buildings.
