Considering the vital role that the English
language plays in contemporary society and the changing needs of institutions
around the world, gaining a thorough knowledge of English can help people in
a number of ways. The primary aim of this research is therefore to identify
the levels of knowledge of English and attitudes towards learning English
among Saudi students at the Globe English institute, Exeter, UK. To achieve
this aim, a structured questionnaire is designed in order to gather related
data from a sample of 30 respondents, comprising 17 male and 13 female
students. This study seeks to establish the relationship between knowledge of
English, attitude towards learning English, and demographic factors such as
the age, gender, and major of respondents. According to the survey findings,
it may be stated that there is a significant favourable relationship between
knowledge of English and attitude of respondents towards learning the English
language. The identified statistical results will be discussed as they
pertain to the preceding literature.

This paper is
concerned with investigating the integration of quantitative and qualitative
data in mixed methods research and whether, in spite of its challenges, it
can be of positive benefit to many investigative studies. The paper
introduces the topic, defines the terms with which this subject deals and
undertakes a literature review to outline the challenges and benefits of
employing this approach to research. The specific terms research, educational
research, research methodologies and methods, research design, quantitative
approaches, qualitative approaches and mixed methods approaches are all
defined. Mixed methods approaches are outlined in terms of their challenges
and benefits, with the researcher offering a personal opinion in conclusion
to the paper. The conclusion that was drawn was that provided that mixed
methods research was a suitable approach to any given project, its use would
yield positive benefits, in that the use of differing approaches has the
potential to provide a greater depth and breadth of information which is not
possible utilising singular approaches in isolation. In spite of its
time-consuming nature, and the suspicion with which some quarters of academia
still regard mixed methods research, it does afford opportunities for researchers
to have an informed conversation or debate involving information that is
generated by both quantitative and qualitative collection methods.
Furthermore, evidence would suggest that, rather than restricting the
opportunities for research by only utilising either qualitative or
quantitative methods, a mixed methods approach provides researchers with a
greater scope to investigate educational issues using both words and numbers,
to the benefit of educational establishments and society as a whole.

The majority of pilgrims
do not speak Arabic and may encounter difficulties performing Hajj in terms
of appropriate procedures and places due to their unfamiliarity. Most
pilgrims are there for the first time. Researchers and practitioners have
sought to develop mobile-based applications to assist pilgrims in various
tasks such as finding their way and avoid becoming lost, and to perform Hajj
procedures properly based on guides on their mobiles. Among the developed
applications, a few are based on augmented reality. Many remain in the
research phase. However, the problem with many augmented-based applications
developed for Hajj is the lack of user acceptance investigation before
implementation. This study found that the applications developed for Hajj
practices based on augmented reality lacked user acceptance test. This study
proposes a model for user acceptance for mobile augmented reality
applications developed for Hajj. It found that pilgrims’ motivations to use
this type of application were ease of use and enjoyment, with little focus on
its utility. This result is interpreted as meaning that the participants have
yet to appreciate the utility of mobile augmented applications.

An Explanatory Mixed Methods
Study Of The Use Of Educational Blogs To Improve EFL Student’s Writing Skills
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
The goal of this study is to investigate
the content of the preparatory year programme (PYP) students’ blog entries,
and to track the improvement of their writing once they have spent fourteen
weeks blogging in English. A further aim is to gauge their perceptions of
affordances of blogging as a tool to learning English as a foreign language
in Taif university, Saudi Arabia. In this investigation, two groups of
preparatory year programme (PYP) control group and experimental group.
Experimental group students studying in Taif university will be selected to
take part in a blogging programme lasting for fourteen weeks. During this
time, students will create a blog account where they will write about the
things they like to share with their peers, such as social commentary, daily
activities, sport, fashion etc. The opinions of these students will also be
assessed to determine and how participation in the blogging process has
affected their attitudes to learning English as a foreign language. Also, the
control group students studying in Taif university will be selected to take
part in this study, will be instructed by the traditional methods in writing
EFL classes. The discoveries of this research have the potential to assist
Saudi education policy makers in implementing the best ways to teach English
as a foreign language, will provide insights into the potential impact of
that a relatively new form of writing, blogging may have on writing
development and attitudes to learning, particularly within public educational
institutions. The conclusions will give educators and educational researchers
sufficient information regarding learning a foreign language using blogging
in the context of the Middle Eastern or Arab world, as most of previous
research has been made in American, Western, and East Asian environments.
