The
advancement of e-learning technologies has made it viable for developments in
education and technology to be combined in order to fulfil educational needs
worldwide. E-learning consists of informal learning approaches and emerging
technologies to support the delivery of learning skills, materials,
collaboration and knowledge sharing. E-learning is a holistic approach that
covers a wide range of courses, technologies and infrastructures to provide
an effective learning environment. The Learning Management System (LMS) is
the core of the entire e-learning process along with technology, content, and
services. This paper investigates the role of model-driven personalisation
support modalities in providing enhanced levels of learning and trusted
assimilation in an e-learning delivery context. We present an analysis of the
impact of an integrated learning path that an e-learning system may employ to
track activities and evaluate the performance of learners.

Optimisation
of e-Learning for Mobile Delivery Platforms
|
ملخص المشاركة:

Recent advances in the capability of the
smart phones coupled with the ubiquitous connectivity that they provide and
the convergence of cloud services and mobile telecoms have led to increasing
interest in leveraging mobile devices for online learning. Teaching
organisations are now adopting new learning methods, informal learning
approaches and emerging technologies, such as social applications of
m-learning that support collaboration, knowledge sharing and lifelong
learning. In some developing countries mobile phones provide the main
communication network available to the public in general and as such
represent an indispensible channel for expanding accessibility to learning
opportunities. However such potential for mass-accessibility to teaching
content calls for efficient and effective delivery of teaching resources
without which the vision of lifelong learning for all would remain largely
unfulfilled. This PhD will investigate the role that model-driven
personalisation support modalities, including the design of the user
interface, can play in providing enhanced levels of learning and trusted
assimilation in a mobile learning (m-learning) delivery context.

User Interfaces for Mobile Learning in Higher
Education in Saudi Arabia
|
ملخص المشاركة:

Mobile devices are becoming increasingly
pervasive within the higher education student community and correspondingly
mobile learning applications are increasingly popular as part of the learning
process. The purpose of this study was to investigate engagement with, and
effectiveness of, different avatar interface types (text, image, audio, video
and cartoon) when used within a mobile learning context, and specifically,
when used to teach the English language courses mandatory within Saudi degree
programmes. One hundred fifty six students from Albaha University
participated in this study which involved students undertaking mini lectures
delivered onto their mobile devices via each of the five avatar types. The
students completed pre/post questionnaires about their perceptions and
experiences of mobile learning and undertook a short test to assess their
performance and retention of information after the mini-lectures. Results
revealed that the majority of students rated the convenience of using
m-learning as being very important and showed that they possessed the
required resources and underlying technical experience required to adopt
m-learning. Results also showed that whilst female students preferred to
learn from video or cartoon interfaces they performed best with cartoon and
audio interfaces, whilst male students preferred the video interface yet
performed better with the cartoon interface.

Investigation
into Students Preferred Interface on Mobile Devices and their Pedagogic
Performance
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
The advancement of mobile learning
technologies has made it viable for developments in education and technology
to be combined in order to fulfil educational needs worldwide. Teaching
organisations are now adopting new teaching methods, informal learning approaches
and emerging technologies, such as smart phones and tablets to support the
delivery of learning skills, materials, collaboration, knowledge sharing and
lifelong learning. The goal of this research is to investigate the benefits
that mobile learning can bring to students studying English as part of their
courses in higher education institutions within Saudi Arabia. The aim of the
research is to investigate the interface between the teacher and student that
resides on the mobile devices and ascertain whether the form of
representation affects student engagement and pedagogic results. With respect
to this, different types of avatar representations of the teacher (text,
static image, audio, video, cartoon) are a key part of this study. 156
students from two collages in Albaha University, Saudi Arabia participated in
the study, undertaking experiments and completing comprehensive pre and post
questionnaires in order to determine if mobile learning is an important
advancement in educational technology. Findings revealed that students, based
on their experience with mobile devices, are well placed to adopt this
technology for learning purposes, however the interface via which educational
content is delivered to the student is important and differs between genders;
females prefer to learn from video/cartoon interfaces whilst males prefer
video interfaces. When retention/understanding of information delivered via
the different interfaces was tested female students performed best in
relation to their preferred learning style (cartoons) as well as the less
popular audio format, whilst males despite preferring to learn via video were
also found to perform best with cartoon style interfaces.
