This
paper is a critical assessment of the merits and drawbacks of qualitative
interviews as a research method. To do so, a brief review of literature
regarding what we mean by interviews and different types of interviews are
presented. Then, practical issues that researchers should put into account
before conducting interviews is discussed. Afterwards, issues researchers
should keep in mind when implementing interviews are provided. An
illustration on how to analyse interviews is addressed. Following this, an
evaluation of interviews as a common research method with its pros and cons
are highlighted. Before concluding this paper, ethical issues that concern
researchers and the use of interviews are delivered.

Teaching
vocabulary has been mistreated due to the allegation that learners will
attain the lexical items through learning without the need to focus on them
explicitly. However, by the advent of new pedagogical approaches, different
strategies that take account of teaching vocabulary have emerged. One of
these strategies is the learner’s ability to infer the meaning of words from
the context.
In
this paper, an attempt is made to review the trends in the area of teaching
and learning vocabulary through guessing the meaning of words from the
context. A review of the literature regarding this strategy is presented.
Then, variables which might affect applying the strategy are discussed. After
that, recommendations on how to apply this strategy efficiently followed by
an evaluation of its merits and shortcomings are given. Finally, proposals on
how to employ this strategy pedagogically are suggested with a brief
illustration on current course books and their support of this strategy.

Writing is a pivotal
system that transfers spoken utterances from being heard to being seen and
read. Literacy is appraised not only by reading and writing accurately, but
also spelling words correctly. Pedagogically speaking, second language
learners (L2) may struggle in their English writing more than first language
speakers (L1) due to different reasons. Even among L2 learners, it is
believed that Arab learners struggle with English spelling more than any
other non-native speakers. This paper, therefore, is an attempt to review
recent research and literature on the spelling errors made by Arab learners.
In addition, a small experimental study of intermediate high school Saudi
students aged 17-18 years old (n = 26) is implemented in a context that has
not been explored yet. All participating students were tested before taking
part in the study. The results of this study are consistent with previous
research, which found that spelling errors made by Arab learners are
associated with the impact of their L1. The most common spelling errors are
consonant doubling, silent letters, final [e] and vowels in general. It is,
thus, indispensable for Arab instructors and stakeholders to scrutinize this
dilemma explicitly.

Discourse analysis is
the study of language in either spoken or written form. Written discourse is
considered an imperative aspect that needs to be analysed. Cohesion,
coherence, clause relations and text patterns are all parts of written
discourse. This paper, therefore, aims to shed some light on the analysis of
several written texts by discussing the possibility of applying written
discourse analysis in English language teaching contexts. The paper starts by
reviewing related literature about the meaning of cohesion, coherence,
cohesive devices and text patterns, followed by reasons for choosing written
discourse analysis in particular. Following this, an analysis of several written
texts, together with the possibility of applying written discourse analysis
in English language teaching, is presented. Before concluding this paper, an
evaluation of the proposed application is provided. It is found that applying
written discourse analysis in teaching written texts via the use of a problem
solution pattern (SPRE) can increase what to expect in reading texts and the
ability to write coherently. Although the author did not have the opportunity
to apply this task, generally speaking, most text patterns involving SPRE are
highly recommended for students when it comes to shaping their writing and
this therefore makes students’ writing coherent and easily readable.

Consistency
Between Teachers’ Attitudes And Their Use Of L1 in Efl Classroom
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
This study explores the consistency between teachers‘
attitudes and their actual use of the first language (hereafter L1) in the
second language (hereafter L2) classroom. It has been claimed that peoples‘
beliefs are not always consistent with their practice. Pedagogically,
teachers may lack the ability to put their beliefs into practice. The present
study took place in Majmaah University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. An
interview with three teachers are implemented. In addition, a classroom
observation of the three interviewed teachers are
conducted. A qualitative approach are employed and two data
collections are implemented, namely, semi-structured interviews and classroom
observation. The data are analysed qualitatively via thematic approach.
The results reveal that teachers‘ practice was not
consistent with their attitudes. This contradiction may refer to their
negative feeling towards their obliged use of L1. Moreover, it could be a
result of their hesitance in their actual use in classrooms.

Code-switching
in Religious Institutions
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
An important
area in sociolinguistics is the phenomenon of code-switching (hereafter CS).
Switching between two or more linguistic varieties often occurs in bilingual
societies and communities (Gardner-Chloros, 2009). An investigation of the
functions and attitudes of CS affords a comprehensive awareness of different
language aspects. Many studies have been conducted regarding the use of CS
within institutional settings. However, far too little attention has been
paid to CS outside of these settings, such as within a religious setting. In
particular, Islamic preachers may CS in their sermons in the mosque.
Therefore,
this study aims to examine how both Islamic preachers and mosque audiences
see the use of CS from English to Arabic and how they view the functions of
preachers’ CS in sermons delivered in mosques. To do so, observations (as a
stimulated recall) to some sermons followed by interviews with both preachers
and audiences will shed the light on this phenomenon. The data will be
analysed qualitatively by both thematic and content analysis approaches.

Language Choice
in Religious Discourse
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
In a rarely explored
set of institutional settings, mosques in the UK in this instance, the
employment of diverse linguistic resources (English and Arabic) has been
described as having spiritual, emotional and pedagogical significance,
invoking religious links associated between Arabic and Islam. Stakeholders,
especially audiences, claim benefits beyond language used in the sermons
themselves. To explore this phenomenon, a qualitatively-oriented ethnographic
study was undertaken by means of semi-structured interviews and
non-participant observation with Islamic preachers and mosque audiences.
Functions of employing more than one language in a one-way religious speech
is a means to increase authenticity, expose audiences to Arabic, a lack of
easy equivalents in English, emphasising religious authority (given the very
close links between Arabic and Islam), an assumption of audiences’ knowledge
of some Arabic features (mostly in the form of words), or to accommodate the
diverse backgrounds of the audience, some of whom have knowledge of Arabic.
Islamic preachers, in addition, have also tended to see the use of both
English and Arabic as socially and culturally salient, a means to unite
people in an otherwise often fractured world, or one frequently presented as
such in the media. Attitudes towards this phenomenon in mosques have been
reported, by all those involved as being very positive.
