In Saudi Arabia, families of
special needs children deal with several specialists who contribute to the
development of parents’ skills and instruct them about the proper care for
their children. However, some families experience pressure due to contradictory
information and conflicting suggestions from specialists regarding the
condition and diagnosis of their children. This research investigates the
concept of consultation and collaboration as applied and researched in the
USA and emphasizes its importance among workers and specialists in special
education programs. The research analyzes several aspects of consultation and
collaboration, differentiates between each one, shows their importance and
illustrates the scientific techniques used in this process. The research
concludes that officials should focus on activating the role of consultation
and collaboration in special education programs. It also reveals the
importance of training workers in special education in pre-service, with
field work on employing the several techniques of consultation and
collaboration. Moreover, in the specific context of the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, specialists must build on the American experience in the application
of consultation and collaboration and aim for scientific planning and
implication and continuous assessment of consultation and collaboration.

The aim of the study is to
recognize and compare the effectiveness of the two procedures (Most to Least
Procedure and Constant Time Delay Procedure) in helping girls with Moderate
and Severe Intellectual Disability to acquire some independent skills, specifically
the tooth brushing skill. The number of trials and the period needed to
acquire the skills, as well as the Percentage of Errors will determine the
more effective procedure. This study used the semi-empirical research method.
The sample study is composed of 6 girls registered and engaged at the General
Qualification Center in Malaz, Riyadh city. The girls are divided into two
equal groups and are subsequently trained to brush their teeth. The Most to
Least Procedure was used with the first group and the Procedure of Constant
Time Delay was used with the second group. The study findings showed that use
of the Most to Least Procedure was effective, as the girls in the first group
acquired the skill (tooth brushing) with a success rate of 100%. In addition,
the girls were able to maintain this skill and generalize it. The rate of
maintenance reached 100%, and the rate of generalization reached 82% – 94%.
The procedure of Constant Time Delay also proved to be effective as the first
and third girls acquired the targeted skill with a 100% success rate, while
the second girl acquired it with 94% success rate. The ability to maintain
this skill ranged between 64% – 100%, whereas the ability to generalize
ranged between 88% – 94%. The study shows that the use of Constant Time Delay
is more effective than the Most to Least Procedure in terms of the number of
trials and time taken to acquire the skills, while maintaining a low
percentage of errors. Girls acquired the skill of tooth brushing through use
of Constant Time Delay in 64 sessions, while the total time taken to make all
the girls acquire the skill was 486 minutes, with a percentage of errors of
5%. In the Most to Least Procedure, girls acquired the skill in 72 sessions
and the total time taken for making all girls acquire the skill was 552
minutes with a total percentage of errors of 7%.

Investigating the Role of Social
Media in Supporting Parents and Teachers of Students with Down Syndrome:
Focus on Early Intervention Services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
The
number of social media users amongst special education teachers and parents
of children with Down Syndrome (DS) is increasing annually. This is also the
case in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). However, to the best of my
knowledge, there are no qualitative studies which testify to the true nature
of the interaction between teachers and parents when using social media, nor
the role of social media in supporting and assisting parents and teachers
with regards to the children’s educational needs in KSA. Therefore, this
ongoing study aims to identify the role of social media in supporting parents
and teachers of DS students, with a special emphasis on early intervention
services in KSA. By bridging the knowledge gap on social media and special
education in KSA and presenting socially relevant and applied information on
the topic, this research provides a theoretical and practical base for the
establishment of appropriate and effective programmes between the ministries
of Information and Special Education in particular. A qualitative approach
was selected because it was the most suitable approach for exploring the
participants’ experiences, which could not be determined through scientific
tests. Interviewing, chosen as the research instrument, allowed the researcher
to obtain a detailed understanding of the topic linked to the study
objectives. Initially, a pilot study was conducted at the Daycare Center in
May 2016. Its aim was to examine and refine the methodology and assess
whether the questions were understood with the potential for re-drafting
them, if necessary. The main study consists of five teachers and five mothers
with experience of using social media and with links to the Daycare Center.
Thematic Analysis has been chosen for analysing the findings because it is a
flexible method that allows themes to emerge from the data. Results of the
current study are still in the initial stages, but the preliminary findings
are as follows: (1) social media is an important tool in encouraging parents
and teachers to access the necessary information and knowledge about, and
experience in, early intervention services; (2) it acts as a support network
for the parents; (3) it helps raise awareness about DS and the need for early
intervention; (4) it can be used to put pressure on the government for an
expansion in early intervention services, and finally (5) its use can be
problematic in that parents and teachers face some difficulties and
challenges when using the different platforms. It can be concluded that
social media plays a significant role in the lives of teachers and parents
with special needs children in KSA.

The
