The
penetration of nonlinear loads on power systems increases the harmonics that
can cause detrimental problems to power systems such as an increase in
voltage distortion, equipment failure, system resonance, increase system
losses and decrease system efficiency. Many factors affect the harmonics
produced by nonlinear loads. Hence, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the
impacts of system voltage, impedance, frequency and background voltage
distortion on the harmonics generated by a group of Compact Fluorescent Lamps
(CFLs). Experimental measurements are performed for this purpose.

Simulation of non-linear loads for harmonic
studies
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
The
penetration of nonlinear loads on power systems increases distortion levels
and can cause severe problems to power systems. Many factors affect the
degree of generated harmonics including the background voltage distortion and
percentage of nonlinear load to the total load. Hence, the purpose of this
paper is to investigate and accurately quantify the effects of these two
factors on the harmonics produced by a group of Personal Computers (PCs).
Experimental measurements and computer simulations are performed to confirm
the observations.

Modelling
and Simulation of a 3kW Residential Photovoltaic for Harmonics Analysis

ملخص المشاركة:

Growing
concern for environmental issues and advancement in power electronic
technology resulted in fast development of energy production using renewable
energy resources (RES). These natural resources play an important role on
power system generation and one of the most promising energy resources
nowadays is the solar energy. Photovoltaic (PV) arrays are used to generate
electric energy from sunlight and their penetration in electric power systems
is increasing exponentially. However, these PVs are connected to power
systems through power electronic converters which cause voltage and current
harmonics to be injected into the systems. To quantify the harmonics produced
by PVs precisely, two simulation models are introduced and modeled using
Matlab Simulink. The objective of this research work is to compare the
simulation results of the two models.

Experimental Measurements and Computer
Simulations of FL and CFL for Harmonic Studies
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Due
to poor efficiencies of Incandescent Lamps (ILs), Fluorescent Lamps (FLs) and
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are increasingly used in residential and
commercial applications. This proliferation of FLs and CFLs increases the
harmonics level in distribution systems that could affect power systems and
end users. In order to quantify the harmonics produced by FLs and CFLs
precisely, accurate modelling of these loads are required. Matlab Simulink is
used to model and simulate the full models of FLs and CFLs to give close
results to the experimental measurements. Moreover, a Constant Load Power
(CLP) model is also modelled and its results are compared with the full
models of FLs and CFLs. This CLP model is much faster to simulate and easier
to model than the full model. Such models help engineers and researchers to
evaluate the harmonics exist within households and commercial buildings.

Experimental Measurements and Computer
Simulations of Home Appliances Loads for Harmonic Studies
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Due
to the advancement in power electronics industry, home appliances become more
power electronics based. The widespread use of these nonlinear loads
increases the harmonics in distribution systems and affects the voltage
quality of power systems. In order to quantify the harmonics produced by LCD
TV, regular refrigerator and Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) washer precisely,
accurate modeling of these loads are required. Firstly, experimental
measurements have been carried out to quantify the harmonics injected by the
loads. Then, Matlab Simulink is used to model and simulate these loads to
give close results to the experimental measurements. Such models help
engineers and researchers to evaluate the harmonics that exist within a
residential sector.

Mathematical Modeling of the Harmonic Distortion Caused by a Group of
PCs Using Curve Fitting Technique
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
The
penetration of nonlinear loads within the commercial and residential sectors
can cause severe problems to power systems including an increase in voltage
distortion, thermal effects on rotating machines, a decrease in power factor,
impact on energy metering and a decrease in the overall system efficiency. In
order to precisely assess their effects on power systems, Personal Computers
(PCs) were monitored and harmonic indices were measured. Curve fitting
technique is then used to formulate the mathematical relationships between
the harmonics generated from the PCs versus different system conditions
including the variations of source voltage, impedance, frequency and
background voltage distortion. Practical variations of these parameters were
considered.
