We report trends in type 2 diabetes
mellitus and obesity in adults residing in the Arabian Gulf States. Among the
Saudi population, the prevalence of diabetes increased from 10.6% in 1989 to
32.1% in 2009. Prevalence of the disease increased faster among Saudi men
than women, with growth rates of 0.8% and 0.6% per year, respectively.

A trend analysis of
the prevalence of diabetes in Saudi Arabia revealed a steep increase in
diagnosis rates for the disease between the years 1989 and 2009. Between
these years, the percentage of the population suffering from diabetes rose
from 10.6% to 32.1% of the adult population, and the diagnosis rate is likely
to increase in the future. The controlling and prevention of diabetes in the
future, therefore, would potentially benefit from a scholarly review of
current policies and programmes designed to contain the disease. The current
study examines such policies and programmes, specifically those existing in
Saudi Arabia and which are currently in operation in 2016. It employs the
thematic-content-analysis technique to review key literature, and also uses
Walt and Gibson’s policy triangle framework to facilitate the analysis.
Searches of PubMed and Medline databases were conducted to locate sources and
sources were manually screened by the authors before inclusion in the study.
The study concludes that prime obstacles to the successful implementation of
diabetes programmes are: insufficient training of practitioners for the
treatment of diabetes; lack of remuneration for the work of diabetes
educators and no existing evaluation of their outputs; and a lack of training
and appropriate modes of qualifying professionally for diabetes educators.
The authors recommend that the Saudi government award a greater proportion of
resources to programmes designed to treat diabetes sufferers, as well as
educational programmes related to disease for the wider public.

Epidemic profile of T2DM and obesity in
adult in Arabian gulf states. A systematic review
|
ملخص المشاركة:

Aim: To review published studies regarding
the prevalence of T2DM and obesity in Arabian Gulf states, from 1981 to 2011.
Methods: This systematic review used
Medline, Embase, and the reference list from studies identified. Studies were
selected which reported the prevalence of T2DM and obesity in adults, in
Arabian Gulf states. We, used World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for
the diagnosis of diabetes, and included studies giving the date of the data
extraction. Two authors independently extracted data to identify the country,
the number of participants, the number of cases, the prevalence, and the
diagnostic criteria used.
Results: From 1,386 studies screened, a
total of 34 studies met the inclusion criteria. Few studies reporting trends
in obesity, and, due to the heterogeneity between the studies, we can only
report the changes in T2DM prevalence in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The
prevalence in (KSA) increased from 10.6% to 32.1% between 1989 and 2009. T2DM
increased faster in Saudi men than women, growth rates were 0.8%/ and 0.6%
per year, respectively. The meta-analysis demonstrated that the rate of
increase in men were significantly greater t (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of
T2DM and obesity in Arabian Gulf countries. Policy makers monitor this trend
and implement a diabetes prevention program in KSA.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus
(T2DM) is increasing worldwide. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF)
reports a worldwide epidemic in diabetes. It is estimated that the number of
people suffering from any type of diabetes in 2011 was 366 million and is
expected to reach 552 million by 2030, with over 90% of these cases being
T2DM.this study aimed to systematically review published studies regarding
the prevalence of T2DM and obesity among children and adolescents in Arabian
Gulf states, from 1987 to 2011.Medline, Embase, were searched and the
reference list from studies identified. Studies were selected which reported
the prevalence of T2DM and obesity in children and Adolescents, in Arabian
Gulf states. We, used World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for the
diagnosis of diabetes, and included studies giving the date of the data
extraction. From 1,497 studies screened, a total of 30 studies met the
inclusion criteria. Two reviewers extracted data to identify the country,
number of participants, age group, and number of cases, prevalence, and the
diagnostic criteria used. The result of this review revelled that T2DM
prevalence in the Arabian Gulf States increased from 0.02% to 4.3% between
2002 and 2011. While obesity prevalence in the Arabian Gulf States increased
from 6.7% to 20.6% between 1989 and 2005.
