Secure and energy efficient routing protocol is fairly an open research despite a plethora of routing protocols has been proposed in the literature. However, most routing protocols specifically designed for resource constrained wireless devices, if not all, follow from the same perspective and almost have reached the maximum improvements. This chapter describes the design of cross-layer secure multi-hop zone routing protocol (MZRP) and a hybrid energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) featuring the benefits from both carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) and time-division multiple access (TDMA). MZRP employs the intelligent artificial neural network (ANN) self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm, which is performed at the coordinator or the base station (BS) to divide the area into multi-level zones. Then cluster heads (CHs) are chosen using k-medoids in each zone. The performance of MZRP is better in terms of energy efficiency compared to dual-hop and HT2HL as it extends the network lifetime using hybrid MAC and the security algorithm employed has less message update. |

The United Nations (UN) has set 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015/2016 as a strategic plan to help governments around the globe to develop national plans to achieve the Agenda 2030 for a sustainable future. These SDGs are somehow fulfilled in a way or another in the 2030 vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) besides other goals. This paper focuses on the 17 SDGs attainable in the KSA’s vision. Each SDG has several strategic objectives or indicators which have target values to be achieved in the 2030 vision. The progress towards these targets are measured quarterly as a percentage of the target values and identify the enforcement of critical adjustments quarterly or annually. The Threshold21-iSDG model developed by the Millennium Institute (MI) has been used to assess the performance for SDG attainments in the KSA’s vision. The progress for the 17 SDGs achieved by 2030 are compared for three different scenarios (i.e., business-as-usual (BAU), Vision Realization Programs (VRPs) and an “SDG” with critical adjustments) and they are portrayed on the SDG wheel. The progress attainable using SDG scenario is better compared to other scenarios. |

Threshold sensitive heterogeneous LEACH protocol for wireless sensor networks |
ملخص المشاركة: |
Due to the inherent limitations of the sensor nodes (SNs) and the distributed nature of information in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy efficient routing protocols have received significant research attention. Hierarchical routing based on clustering have been proven to be an effective method for energy-efficiency. Moreover, the presence of heterogeneous nodes with varied initial energies can improve the lifetime of WSNs. Although LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) protocol is a homogeneous scheme, its performance can be improved by taking advantage of the presence of heterogeneous nodes. In this paper, a hybrid threshold sensitive and two-level heterogeneous LEACH (HT2HL) protocol is proposed. HT2HL combines the operation of heterogeneous LEACH and TEEN (Threshold sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network) protocols. HT2HL has been simulated in MATLAB and the results are compared with the known heterogeneous protocols SEP and DEEC for two-level heterogeneity. The metrics used in the performance evaluation are stability period in which the first node dies (FND), network lifetime which gives the number of alive nodes until half of the nodes die (HND) and when the last node dies (LND), the remaining energy and data rate over the network (throughput). The simulation results show that the proposed HT2HL protocol outperforms SEP and DEEC. |

IoT architecture and routing for MV and LV smart grid |
ملخص المشاركة: |
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are cost effective for numerous applications including smart cities, environmental monitoring, industry process control, etc. Hence, WSNs form the major hardware infrastructure for the Internet of Things (IoT). Nowadays, homes and cities become smarter by installing sensors and actuators to manage energy consumption through WSNs and IoT integration. According to the demand, loads are shut off or can be shifted to off-peak times. The 2030 and 2050 visions of Electrical power system are not only to deliver energy from suppliers to consumers but also to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) into the electrical power system to reduce the cost, optimize the energy and increase the reliability. Though Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) is used to monitor high power transmission, low and medium voltages are less monitored and controlled. This paper proposes an architecture for IoT smart grid (SG) to monitor and control low and medium voltage networks. Since WSNs is being incorporated, careful designing of energy efficient routing protocol is critical due to limited power of sensor nodes (SNs) and the spread of information in WSNs. This motivates our research to propose an IPv6 compatible hierarchical routing protocol based on clustering for IoT SG. The simulation results of the proposed IPv6 routing protocol achieves extended network lifetime for WSNs and shorter delay compared to standardized RPL. |

An energy efficient and adaptive clustering for wireless sensor network (CH-leach) using leach protocol |
ملخص المشاركة: |
Researchers in wireless sensor networks (WSN), have given deep attention to large scale integration and energy-efficiency (energy consumption). Energy-efficient solutions can conserve valuable sensor-node energy. This is one of the main critical challenges that WSNs face, which plays a fundamental part in determining the lifetime of the network. Although, there are many WSN protocols, clustering based hierarchal routing protocols are given more consideration because of their improve scalability. In particular, sensors are battery-powered, often limiting available energy, which is not changeable in most of the situations. One of the most common energy-efficiency sensor networks protocols is Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) as source. In this paper, we propose CH-leach. We present architectures, schemes and evaluate. Its performance using analytical study and simulations. The evaluation was based on the most critical metrics in WSNs, such as: energy-efficiency (energy consumption), and network lifetime. The evaluation and comparison with existing solutions show that our proposed CH-leach exhibits a reduction in energy consumption over LEACH and DEEC. While the overall network lifetime of CH-leach is improved 91% and 43% more than LEACH and DEEC protocols respectively. |
