Over the past two decades, various studies have shown that not only negative but also positive information evokes attentional bias. In this chapter, we will discuss theories and evidence investigating when and why positive information attracts attention. Specifically, we will argue that top-down factors such as temporary goals can not only induce but also prevent attention to positive events. This will be followed by a review of main paradigms that have been used to measure attentional bias to positive information. Then, we will highlight the brain regions and psychophysiological responses that are associated with attention to positive input. We will discuss how attention to positive events has been highlighted as characteristic of healthy populations but can also be problematic, for instance, obesity seems to be related to an attentional bias to high-caloric but tasty food. We will finish the chapter by highlighting limitations and suggestions for future research. |

Putting things in perspective: How self-affirmation affects the experience of emotion and emotion regulation |
ملخص المشاركة: |
Emotions are responses to important events in people’s life. For instance, people frequently feel fear when their safety is threatened or anger when somebody (or something) prevents them from achieving an important goal. Relatedly, people feel pride when achieving important goals. Based on self-affirmation theory, the current research aimed to investigate that whether providing an opportunity to self-affirm or putting things in perspective that is being reminded of the importance of other goals than the emotion-causing stimulus changes the experience of emotions and/or make people want to engage in emotion regulation because the emotional reaction is perceived as inappropriate. Number of recruited participants (N= 90) from the University of Reading were given task (Tier Social Stress task) which induce emotional states and measure their emotional experience before and after the emotion regulation. We measured individual differences in trait anxiety and emotion regulation skills, manipulated the opportunity for self-affirmation. It is concluded that self-affirmation may be an effective way to reduce anxiety for anxious people. |
