Until recently, the subject of child abuse in Saudi Arabia received very little attention. It was only in the 1990s that cases of child abuse and neglect began to be reported by the Saudi medical profession. A comprehensive, systematic review of the published literature available since that time is presented here. The paucity of research conducted to date is reflected in the fact that only nine articles were found that satisfied the selection criteria, plus four others identified through a search of grey literature. An appraisal tool was used to assess the quality of these studies. The relevant work that has been published indicates that child abuse, of various types, exists within Saudi Arabia but the research does not provide sufficient statistical evidence to be able to determine the extent of the problem. However, there are indications in the published literature of some of the factors that may contribute to child abuse in the Kingdom. These include cultural and societal attitudes, and income and educational levels of parents. Another contributing influence on child abuse in Saudi Arabia appears to be the lack of legislation or legal clarity to protect the rights of minors. Although the review found that there are some government and private initiatives aimed at addressing the issue, these remain inadequate because no formal unifying organization yet exists. A summary of the findings and their implications is followed by a discussion of where further research is needed to fill the gaps in present knowledge of the child abuse problem in Saudi Arabia. Recommendations for future work are made in the hope that this will lead to increased awareness of this important and long-neglected issue among professionals and public alike. |

The sexual abuse of children is a serious and persistent problem in Saudi Arabia, as it is in every country, worldwide. However, it is only recently that any kind of official statistics and academic studies have begun to be published on this issue in Saudi Arabia and there remains a great scarceness of data on the subject owing to its sensitivity in a society that is highly conservative and reluctant to discuss such matters openly. Services and programs aiming at addressing the problem in the Kingdom remain at an infant stage, and much still needs to be done in the form of raising public awareness of the issue and setting up mechanisms by which children at risk can readily and safely inform the appropriate authorities of their circumstances and receive prompt attention and protection. Research, over many years, has shown that any form of childhood abuse is likely to have significant short-, medium-, and long-term consequences for the individual, in terms of their psychological, physical, social, moral, and educational development. Thus, swift action and intervention where abuse has, or is likely to, take place is of great importance. However, the establishment of effective services and programs depends on a thorough understanding of the scale and nature of the problem in the particular social and cultural setting in which it occurs. The present work consists of a systematic review of the limited literature currently available on child sexual abuse in Saudi Arabia. It examines the findings of the studies carried out to date, including such statistical data on sexual abuse as is currently available, and makes recommendations for future action by researchers and government agencies within the country. |

Child emotional abuse is one of the most commonly occurring forms of childhood abuse worldwide, yet one of the least well understood, both in terms of its occurrence and its effects on the victims. It is difficult to study because it leaves no physical marks and is perpetrated, not through hitting, physical neglect, or sexual abuse, but through certain usages of language, and through threat, rejection, isolation, and other forms of emotional intimidation and deprivation. It may, however, accompany these other forms of abuse. The present research is focused specifically on emotional child abuse in Saudi Arabia, a country that is, by nature, extremely conservative, both socially and culturally. Until quite recently, Saudi Arabia had been the subject of few academic studies concerned with any form of child abuse. The aim of the present research is to conduct a systematic literature review on the subject of child emotional abuse in the Kingdom. A primary goal is to establish what is known about the incidence of such abuse and to explore gender and cohort differences to see if different age and socioeconomic groups are affected more than others. Secondary goals are to establish if there have been any changes in reported incidence of child emotional abuse in Saudi Arabia, to gauge the extent to which researchers and social workers are now ready to address this problem, and to identify what, if any, programs and policies have been put in place at a governmental level to meet the challenge of this form of abuse. |

The Extent of Negligence of Children in Saudi Arabia: A Literature Review |

Child neglect, through physical, mental, and emotional deprivation, is a worldwide phenomenon. However, until comparatively recently, scientific data and academic research on it within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) had been extremely limited due to the conservative nature of the society in this country. A systemic review was conducted, using several databases, including those of Cross Search, Social Sciences Citation Index, two Saudi universities, and manual searches of key journals of literature on child neglect in KSA published between 1990 and 2016. The results of this review are presented, which summarize the present state of knowledge of child neglect in Saudi Arabia and what progress has been made toward a full understanding of the extent and nature of the problem. The statistical evidence currently available on the incidence and prevalence of neglect is displayed together with qualitative information on cases of neglect that have been documented by doctors, social workers, and other professionals working in the field. The present state of provision of government programs to assist and support victims of child neglect in Saudi Arabia is considered and contrasted with the services available in other, predominantly Western nations. It is noted that, in addition to a still-inadequate level of investment in this area, present programs in the Kingdom are not well-suited to preventing neglect in the first place. Recommendations are made as to what steps could be taken in the future to improve and expand Saudi provision of care to address this problem. |

A systematic review was conducted to find out what is known about the prevalence and nature of physical child abuse in Saudi. The review identified 15 abuse prevalence studies carried out in Saudi Arabia between 1998 and 2016, written in English or Arabic. An analysis of these revealed the known prevalence of different types of child abuse, the relationship of the abuser to the victim, and the level of awareness among school professionals of procedures and programs in Saudi to protect children from abuse. The review revealed many shortcomings of existing literature, including a paucity of published studies, lack of rigor in research design, an absence of data from many parts of the country, and an emphasis on hospital reports rather than data collected directly from victims. Studies conducted to date suggest that physical abuse of children is more widespread and severe in the Kingdom than previously acknowledged. |

The Difference Between Physical Abuse And Physical Punishment Of Children And Their Impact |

A detailed, critical, systematic literature review is carried out to investigate both distinctions and connections between physical abuse and physical punishment of children, and the impact that these may have on the future wellbeing of victims. The literature contains a broad spectrum of definitions of the terms abuse and punishment in this context. Such definitions differ not only between one researcher and the next but have tended to change over time. Moreover, there are marked differences in how physical, or corporal, punishment is perceived between different individuals, societies and cultures. The effect that physical abuse and punishment has on the future health, behaviour, psychology, and ability to socialise of victims is examined. Links between the severity, frequency, victim’s age, and relationship to the perpetrator and the future outcomes for the victim are investigated. Of particular interest is the extent to which different nations, societies and cultures to this day showed very marked differences in the way they regard the corporal punishment of children. A growing number of countries, especially in Western Europe, have made it illegal to physically punish children in any way, effectively equating it to abuse. On the other hand, in countries such as the United States, where physical punishment remains legal, it is widely accepted as a means to instil discipline and deter bad behaviour. In yet other countries and societies, for example those whose legal systems enshrine strict Islamic principles, it is considered not only normal but obligatory to apply physical discipline, within prescribed limits, to children above a certain age in order that young people should comply with the rules of their family and religion. Thus, whereas under some jurisdictions physical punishment – even harsh punishment, using for example a stick is acceptable, in others it is illegal, treated as abuse, and deemed to be harmful to the child. |

Physical child abuse and harsh physical punishment of children occur on a frequent basis worldwide with numerous negative outcomes for the victims. The severity and longevity of the effects, which may be physical, psychological, cognitive, behavioral, and/or social, are dependent on a number of factors, including the age at which the abuse or punishment began, its extent, duration, and context, and the relationship of the abuser(s) to the victim. Perceptions as to what is meant by “physical abuse” and “corporal punishment” with regard to children, and the distinction between these, have varied over time and continue to vary between individuals and societies. Researchers continue to debate both the exact meaning of these terms and the consequences they may have, both short-term and long-term, on different aspects of the development and well-being of children. There remains controversy, for example, over the long-term effects of mild corporal punishment as a means of disciplining children. In a growing number of Western countries, no clear distinction is drawn between physical abuse and physical punishment to the extent that, in these jurisdictions, it is illegal for an adult to strike a child in any way or at any time or place. By contrast in many non-Western countries it is not only common for children to receive harsh physical punishment and/or be physically abused but there is no social stigma associated with such treatment, either at home or at school, and little or no protection is afforded for the child at an official level; indeed, it may have tacit approval, for example as a means of enforcing discipline and compliance on religious grounds. The basis of the present work is a critical systematic literature review of research conducted on the impact of physical child punishment and abuse. Results are presented regarding the impact of such treatment on the victim, the variables that may influence the outcome for those affected, and causative factors of the phenomena. |

Background: Child abuse, neglect and recognition of the problems have been reported in Saudi Arabia significantly in the last two decades. Limited measurements were taken to protect children from abuse and efforts aiming to prevent their infancy. The implementation of effective protection services and prevention programs depends upon a better understanding of the nature and extent of the abuse. Aims: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to establish what is known of the prevalence and nature of physical child abuse in Saudi Arabia. Methods: Several studies, in either English or Arabic, between 1998–2014 were identified using hand searches and a number of specialised search engines. Analysis of these revealed the known relative prevalence of different types of child abuse, the relationship of the abuser to the victim, and the level of awareness among school professionals of procedures and programs in Saudi Arabia to protect children from abuse. Main findings: Shortcomings were found in the existing literature, including a paucity of published studies, small sample sizes, limitations in research methodology, an absence of data from many parts of the country, especially outside the capital, Riyadh, and an emphasis on hospital reports rather than data collected directly from the victims themselves. Conclusion: Studies carried out so far suggest that physical abuse of children is more widespread in the Kingdom than previously acknowledged. Recommendations are made for future research. |

Long-term Effects of Physical Abuse of Children in Saudi Arabia |

Physical abuse by parents of their offspring is known to have a variety of potential long-term consequences for the child victims, including negative effects on physical and mental health. These consequences may include chronic depression and anxiety, eating disorders, and suicidal tendencies. During their formative years, children who have been physically abused may be subject to behavioral and conduct disorders, such as difficulties in concentrating, underperforming in school, and having problems forming close friendships and in their general social interactions with others. In time, they may be more prone to experimenting with drugs, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, criminal activity, and engaging in risky sexual behavior, possibly leading to sexually transmitted infections. The extent and degree of these consequences may be related to the age at which physical abuse began, and the frequency and severity of the abuse. It is also known that having been physically abused as a child, an individual may be more prone to inflicting such abuse on others, including their own children, so that the cycle of violence is perpetuated. Physical abuse may take many forms, including striking with an open hand or fist, hitting with an implement, or, in the cases of babies, shaking sufficiently hard to cause head injuries. |

Effects of parental violence on children in Saudi Arabia |

Background: Violent behaviour by parents toward their children, primarily as a means of discipline, is a common occurrence in Saudi Arabia. The frequency and severity of this behaviour varies, and may include such forms as slapping, punching, whipping, and burning. Previous studies, conducted in other countries, have reported a variety of negative psychological and social consequences stemming from such violence.
Aims: The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of physical abuse of children and adolescents by parents in Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A mixed method approach was adopted involving a questionnaire provided to high school children and interviews conducted with parents. Data was collected using the questionnaire from a sample of 768 male and female secondary school students in two Saudi cities, Hail and Almadinah. The students ranged in age from 12 to 18 years. SPSS was subsequently used to collate and analyse the questionnaire data. Interviews were also conducted with 20 parents, 10 in each city, and the interview results analysed using ANOVA.
Main findings: Approximately half of the students who had experienced violent parental behaviour said they had been profoundly or very significantly affected by it. Significant proportions of students reported sometimes or often experiencing psychological or social problems resulting from violent behaviours. These included bad dreams, use of drugs, desire to self-harm, anxiety or fearfulness, feelings of violence toward others, and feelings of suicide. Interview responses varied widely from parents who believed that any form of physical disciplining was unhelpful to those who thought frequent and strong methods were justified to inspire fear and compliance.
Conclusion: Many Saudi children of high school age have been deeply affected, psychologically and socially, by parental violent behaviour. The impact is manifested in everything from fear and anxiety, which more half of affected students feel, to suicidal thoughts. |
