This
study seeks to develop a comprehensive model of motivation and acceptance in
the context of tablet computer use in learning in higher education. It
proposes an adaptation of some of the variables used in the Technology
Acceptance Model (TAM) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to explain and
predict students’ motivation and acceptance of the technology in their
learning activities. Also, the model identifies a number of moderating
variables that can be used to explain students’ attitudes and intentions. The
model takes account of intrinsic motivation (including variables of perceived
self-efficacy, perceived enjoyment, perceived willingness and perceived
usability), extrinsic motivation (including variables of perceived
usefulness, perceived achievement, perceived mobility and perceived
identity), and variables of attitude, behavioural intention and actual usage.
Furthermore, this model holds that access to the internet, university
utilisation, teachers’ role, device characteristics, personal skill, knowledge
and experience are key factors which directly affect the relationship between
students’ attitudes and their intentions to use tablets in learning. Through
an important cluster of antecedents, the proposed model aims to enhance our
understanding of students’ motivation and acceptance of using tablets in
university education and aid efforts to prompt the adoption of this device in
the higher education sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Attitude of Saudi Undergraduate Students
Towards Adopting Tablet: An Application of Technology Acceptance Model

ملخص المشاركة:

In the
past decade, the education system in general and higher education (HE) in
particular have seen transformation because of the development of information
and communication technology (ICT). The conventional ‘chalk and talk’ mode of
lecturing in universities has been replaced by technology-enabled
teaching-learning processes in the form of multimedia and web-based systems.
The main advantage of technology-enabled learning is that learning can take
place at any time, in any place and at any pace.

How Is Technology Accepted By Users? A
Review Of Technology Acceptance Models And Theories
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
This
paper provides a literature review of the popular theories and models of
technology acceptance of relevance to today’s technology developments in the
4E context. The original technology acceptance model (TAM) was derived from
the theory of reasoned action and has since been developed and extended to
includefactors of age, gender, prior experience, ability, etc. It provides
the framework to measure users’ perceptions of and intentions to use
technology within and across organisations. Through research TAM has been
empirically proven to be a robustmodel for understanding end-user adoption of
technology and for examining the acceptance of new and developing technology
by users with different characteristics in different organisations. The
flexibility of TAM to be extended and modified to take into account other
relevant factors makes it a powerful framework. This paper identifies the
underpinning theories and potential application ina concise way and concludes
that TAM has and will provide underpinning for further understanding of the
pedagogy-technologyepistemology relationship in the development of technology
use.

To Use Or Not To Use: Mobile Learning?
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Information
technologies (IT) have made intense changes in human society. During the 21st
century IT has seen the rapid and unprecedented development of a variety of
mobile devices. The development and widespread use of mobile technology has
led to its integration into the education sectors, resulting in the concept
of mobile learning (m-learning). This paper is based on secondary sources of
data such as books, journal articles, thesis and conference proceedings. It
defines mlearning, discusses the differences between e-learning and
m-learning, and outlines the advantages and disadvantages of mlearning. It
also describes current use of m-learning and concludes that it plays an
important role in education. This paper aims to provide an overview of mobile
learning for either those who have not decided yet whether or not to use
m-learning or those who are not familiar with this concept. Educationalists
can benefit from information on the advantages of mlearning and how it can be
implemented.

Exploring
Preferences and Barriers in Learning with Tablet Computers by University
Students
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Most
students nowadays have mobile technology devices including tablet computers
and use them in their everyday life. Whether students use the technology for
learning or not is the question. The purpose of this study is to investigate
students’ preferred ways as well as barriers to tablet computer use for
learning in higher education. The study sample are consisted of 20 student
interviewees and a further 343 students who answered open-ended questionnaires.
Thematic analysis is used to analyse the data. The results indicated that the
students’ preferred ways of using tablets for learning are to accomplish
their academic tasks, for communication, and for online discussion. They use
the tablet as a learning tool as well as to search online for information
both inside and outside the classroom, and in ways that support their
individual learning styles. The findings showed that the barriers to
students’ tablet use for learning are sight worries, limited resources,
limited support, boredom, distraction, the mobile device characteristics,
discipline, experience, knowledge and personal preference.
