This study aimed to assess, whether depression in
adulthood was associated with self-reported chewing difficulties at older
age, and examine whether the strength of the association differed according
to the number of depression episodes in earlier adult life. We used Whitehall
II study data from 277 participants who completed a questionnaire in 2011.
Depression was measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression
Scale (CES-D) in 2003 and 2008. The association between CES-D depression and
self-reported chewing ability was assessed using regression models adjusted
for some socio-demographic factors. Participants with depression at some
point in their earlier adulthood had an odds ratio (95% CI) of 2·01 (1·06,
3·82) for reporting chewing difficulties in older adulthood, compared to
those without depression. The respective odds ratios were 1·42 (0·66, 3·04)
for individuals with depression in only one phase, but 3·53 (1·51, 8·24) for
those with depression in two phases. In conclusion, while further research is
required, there was an association between depression and chewing difficulty
that was independent of demographic and socio-economic characteristics.
Furthermore, this increased odds for chewing difficulties was primarily among
adults that experienced two episodes or a prolonged period of depression.

The Development and Testing of an Oral Health-Related
Quality of Life Measure for Children/Adolescents with Down Syndrom
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Studies on oral health related quality of life have
revealed that oral health influences psychological wellbeing and satisfaction
in the general population, and there is no reason to suggest that there is
any difference for people with intellectual disabilities. However, this
cannot be confirmed due to the scarcity of the studies aimed at assessing
oral health-related quality of life among this group.
It seems that there is a gap in the literature in
term of studying the impacts of oral health status on quality of life of
people with Intellectual disabilities. Therefore, this study aims to develop
and test an Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) instrument/measure
for children/adolescents with Down syndrome. The study uses a mixed method
approach of two phases: Phase One Data Collection: in-depth, semi-structured
interviews with 20 mothers of (12-18 years old) children with Down syndrome.
Phase Two Data Collection: after questionnaire development from phase one
findings, 50 to 200 children and their mothers will be selected to validate
the developed questionnaire

The Development of an Oral Health-Related Quality of
Life Measure for Children/ Adolescents with Down syndrome
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Studies of oral health of vulnerable group including
those with disabilities show that they are at higher risk of having poor oral
health that might have undesirable impact on different aspects of their lives.
The aim of this study was to develop an Oral Health-Related Quality of Life
(OHRQoL) instrument among children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). In
order to explore mothers’ perspectives and hence formulate the instrument,
interviews with 20 mothers of children with DS were conducted to assess their
perceptions of how oral health of their children impacted upon their lives
(physically, socially, etc.) and the life of their family as a whole.
Analysis of these interviews revealed that from mothers’ perspectives oral
health conditions of children with DS impacted on several aspect of their
life in a complex manner.

Impact of Oral Health on the Quality of Life of
Adolescents with Down syndrome: Qualitative Exploration of Mothers’
Perceptions
|
ملخص المشاركة:
|
Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause
of intellectual disabilities. Individuals with this condition exhibit special
oro-facial characteristics that increase their risk of oral conditions.
However, there is very little research on the way oral health affects the
quality of life of people with DS. Therefore, this study aimed at exploring
mothers’ perceptions on oral health conditions of their children; and also
looking at how the reported problems affect the different aspects of a DS
child’s life. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews of mothers of 12-18 years
old children with DS were conducted in special care centres in Riyadh city of
Saudi Arabia. Data saturation was reached from 20 interviews; and results
revealed that lower priority was given to oral health compared to child’s
general health. The predominant oral-health related problem was difficulty
speaking. Mothers also reported that dental caries and toothache are
important problems that also have an undesirable effect on different aspects
of child’s life including daily activities, emotional wellbeing, and social
relationships. In conclusion, this study revealed an array of undesirable
impacts of oral conditions on different aspects of DS children’s quality of
life. Further studies would be of value to expand on these findings.
