ملخص المشاركة: | The translation of culture-bound expressions such as idioms, proverbs and similes can be a challenge even for professional translators who are expected to have an excellent command of the languages they work with, at least theoretically. Challenges arise when either the image or the meaning of the source language expression does not exist in the target language. For instance, the Arabic simile جحا كمسمار translates literally as “like Juha’s nail” (image). However, a more suitable translation into English would in fact be along the lines of “no more than a vacuous excuse” (meaning). Therefore, in this paper, the author aims to establish, by conducting a survey of Arab professionals, the extent to which these expressions pose a challenge when translating between English and Arabic. In this survey, translators are also asked to translate selected culture-bound expressions and comment on them. The initial results will show that the translation of culture-bound expressions can indeed cause significant challenges for professional translators and that these challenges can be grouped into five categories on the basis of image and meaning. Suggestions regarding procedures will be made to overcome these cultural challenges by category. Overall, the results will suggest that there is a pressing need to increase the cultural component in translator training programmes. |

ملخص المشاركة: | The translation of culture-bound expressions can be a challenge even for professional translators. This paper, therefore, explores the possibility of predicting the level of cultural competence needed in order to avoid translation errors by correlating cultural translation competence to vocabulary size. The results of our survey of Arabic professional translators show that vocabulary size was lower than expected, but vocabulary size can be an indicator of acceptable translation of culture-bound expressions, which we refer to as culture-bound items (CBIs). However, vocabulary size cannot always be used as an indicator of high quality translation. Overall, our results highlight the need for further cultural training for translators. |

ملخص المشاركة: | Although competence in the translation of cultural content is a necessary skill for professional translators, little is known about how to evaluate professional translators’ level of cultural knowledge. This study is one of a series of studies conducted to contribute to assessing cultural knowledge for translators between Arabic and English. Therefore, in this paper, a survey of 56 Arab professional translators in Saudi Arabia was conducted. Participants were asked to select the cultural expressions that they know, which we refer to as cultural-bound items or CBIs. Combining monolingual English and Arabic cultural knowledge tests (ECBI_KT and ACBI_KT) into a bilingual cultural knowledge test, i.e. the 5CT test, the aim is to find whether translators’ processing of English CBIs differ when they see the SL expression with its equivalent compared to the results in Aldhahi et al. (in press) where SL and TL CBIs are presented separately. The initial results show that, by circulating 5CT to the same participants, they achieved higher scores in 5CT than ECBI_KT and ACBI_KT. This would suggest that providing CBIs in SL with their equivalent in TL can enhance cultural knowledge. Overall, this paper suggests that a broad knowledge of CBIs in the SL can help translators to better comprehend and identify an appropriate equivalent in the TL. |

ملخص المشاركة: | The translation of culture-bound items (CBIs) such as idioms and similes can be a challenge even for professional translators, who are expected to have an excellent command of the languages they work with, at least theoretically. Therefore, in this paper, the researchers aim to examine challenges when translating these expressions by conducting a survey of 56 Arab professional translators in Saudi Arabia. They are asked to select the English and Arabic CBIs that they know. We then analyse the survey responses in order to establish to what extent translating CBIs constitute a problem when translating between English and Arabic and to what extent it is possible to translate CBIs with no equivalent. The initial results show that the translation of CBIs can indeed cause significant challenges for professional translators even when there is a direct equivalent in the target language of each of the component words of the expression. This would suggest that testing the cultural knowledge of translators between Arabic and English is highly advisable and that it can lead to increasing the accuracy of their translations. Overall, the study’s findings suggest that there is a pressing need to increase cultural training in translator training programmes. |
